Prayer request update
A few weeks ago i posted some prayer requests. I'd like to really thank you guys for praying.
The things you prayed for have come through pretty well.
The things you prayed for have come through pretty well.
- All the assignments got handed in on time (and then in one case promtly got lost by the office- i hope they find it!). I think i did pretty well.
- I've been allocated on-campus accommodation in Singapore which is a relief.
- Since my airline moved one of my flights by a few hours, i was able to move both flights forward a week with no charge for the first one and only AU$50 for the second one. Considering the situation could have easily resulted in many hundreds of dollars cost from canceling the first lot and booking new tickets, this is a very good outcome

Book review: Gordon D. Fee and Mark L Strauss- How to choose a translation for all its worth
How to choose a translation for all its worth
Gordon D. Fee and Mark L Strauss
162 pages
Published by Zondervan, 2007
Choosing a bible can be a complicated thing. Walk into a Christian bookstore and you will likely be confronted by a barrage of English language translations. Maybe you have encountered people who are very insistent about the use of a particular translation or people who get so excited about a new bible translation or format release that you’d think they were schoolgirls who just got given tickets to a Jonas Brothers concert. In “How to choose a translation for all its worth” Gordon D Fee and Mark L Strauss attempt to throw some light on this topic by explaining some of the issues translators face in bringing the ancient languages of the original bible texts to readable modern English and some of the misunderstandings that surface in debates about bible translations. They also provide a summary of the history, strengths and weaknesses of a large variety of translations. While I did learn from the book, i occasionally got lost in some of the discussions of problematic linguistic aspects. The authors were involved in the translation of the TNIV translation of the bible, so there is probably a bit of bias involved in their conclusions. The book might be a bit over the top if you are just trying to decide on which bible to buy for general reading, but if you are trying to pick a bible for more in-depth study or are interested in how the English bible came to be, you’ll probably find it a worthwhile read.

A few random things i'm enjoying now.
Here's a few things i've been enjoying that haven't really fit into any other section.
Viva La Vida and Love Story are both great tracks in their own right. Mix them together and have them played by some amazing musicians and the results are stunning.
Wolfram Alpha is a cool new online calculation tool. You can ask it to calculate things like the distance between 2 cities, math problems, how common your first name is, how long it has been or is until a particular date, what notes are in a particular musical scale or heaps of other things you might want to know. I think it will be very useful.

Cartoons Copyright Gospel Communications International, Inc - www.reverendfun.com
reverendfun.com do fantastic funny cartoons about the bible and Christianity. These are 2 of my favourites.

Can you please pray for me?
Sorry that it had been a bit quieter than usual around here. Life has turned a bit crazy and i could really use your prayers. I'm in the middle of some major assessments for my course. Please pray that i'd get them done on time and would do them well enough to get the marks i need.
I've also had a whole lot of drama come up in the last few days in regards to my study abroad program.
How can i pray for you?
I've also had a whole lot of drama come up in the last few days in regards to my study abroad program.
- Something went wrong somewhere in the processing of my paperwork which almost lost me my place in the program. Thankfully that was averted and I got my place. The paperwork issues may still cause some difficulties so please pray that it would work out easily.
- I booked plane tickets on what to the best of my knowledge at the time was the correct date. Turns out it wasn't and the airline I booked them with doesn't tend to allow you to move them to another date. Please pray this won't be an expensive mistake to fix.
- My city has had an outbreak of swineflu. It is a very mild strain but lots of people have gotten it. Singapore is very worried about swine flu has been asking people from my city in particular not to come. Please pray that i do not get swine flu (or anything that overzealous customs officers may confuse with swine flu) and that where i come from would not cause me any difficulties in getting out of Australia or into Singapore.
How can i pray for you?
